1. Cambridgeshire Agricultural Storage Unit – New Build
This project involved the construction of a purpose-built grain storage unit designed to handle both load pressure and regular machinery access.
Foundations and Steel Framework
Work began with ground preparation and foundations. Once complete, the structural steel frame was erected using UKCA-marked steel fabricated by a local supplier.
At this stage, accuracy matters. Correct setting out ensures the walling, roofing and access points align properly. Without that, issues tend to appear later.
Walling and Roofing Installation
The client required a durable internal walling system capable of managing grain load pressure.
For this reason, we installed:
- Grain walling panels stacked three high
- 145mm prestressed panels designed to support filling surcharge
- Brett Martin fibre cement roof sheets
- 0.5mm plastisol-coated single skin sheeting above the grain walling
Together, these materials provide durability, ventilation control and long-term performance in an agricultural environment.
Finishing Touches
To complete the building, Stormflo guttering and downpipes were installed to manage surface water effectively. In addition, a roller shutter door was fitted to allow machinery access.
Although these elements are sometimes treated as secondary, they have a direct impact on how the building functions day to day.
What Matters on Agricultural Projects
Agricultural buildings differ from standard commercial units. In particular, they must cope with:
- Heavy internal loads
- Machinery impact
- Condensation risks
- Seasonal temperature changes
- Long-term exposure to the elements
In some cases, refurbishment or over-sheeting is sufficient. However, where systems are ageing or structurally compromised, full replacement may be the more practical option.
Before any recommendation is made, intended use, access requirements and budget are reviewed. This ensures the specification matches operational needs rather than assumptions.
